My Birding Journey

I Love Watching & Photographing Birds, Do You?

I have been a birdwatcher since I was in the 5th grade and this passion is what has lead to the development of this site. The birds of Hawaii have been something so unique that when I first arrived I was enthralled with the colors and fun of discovering new “life” birds at every turn. I hope I can help you to appreciate the native Hawaiian birds, and if you are a birder you may want to consider heading over to see these beautiful Forest birds as they are in real danger of disappearing forever. I am working everyday to capture better and better images for you to see.

I just wanted to add, I have made this site a very basic website just to show off the birds found on the Island.  It would be easy to go overboard and really make the site do a lot of stuff that you may or may not like but I did not want to do that as I am hoping that you love the birds and just want to see and read a little about them on your own.

In the menu above you will see tabs for Native Birds, these are the birds that lived on the Island before the Polynesians arrived and some are in real danger of disappearing forever.

The next tab is Non-native Birds, these birds that have found their way here with the help of man in some fashion and have established breeding populations, they are very pretty and easy to find.

The next tab is for those occasional birds called vagrants, that find their way to the Island and hang around for a while but do not stay any length of time, so you may or may not be able to see them.

The overall mission of this website is to bring focus to birds and more specifically on Hawaiian birds with special emphasis on the endangered birds of Hawaii!

Thank you for coming to my site if you have any comments you will find my contact information by clicking the tab “contact” above.

Birds that you may not realize are Native Hawaiian birds:

Wandering Tattler – Ulili

The Ulili is a common winter visitor, arriving in the Islands by August and leaving for the breeding grounds in Alaska in late April or early May.  You will occasionally see non-breeding individuals over-summering in Hawaii.  It is often mistaken for the Lesser Yellowlegs that occasionally arrives here in the fall by folks visiting the Island for the first time birding.  To see more pictures of this and many other birds click on the “Native Birds” link above.

My Recent Activity

Whenever I travel off the Island, which I do about once a month, I always take my cameras with me.  When I get a chance I watch for opportunities to take photographs of the local birds and occasionally I am able to capture a shot or two.  If you click one of the pictures you will start a slide show which will bring up an enlargement of the bird for you to get a good look at it.  I hope you enjoy the show and if you click on any of the items in the menu above you will be able to see all of the birds found on the Island and you will be better able to identify them as you find each of them in you search on the Island!  Thanks for visiting and click on the contact above if you have any questions and I will do my best to help you out.
